Seattle, Washington – A 16-year-old faced a court on Monday, denying allegations of murder and assault stemming from a tragic incident that culminated in the death of a young girl asleep in her home. Derreon Johnson entered a not guilty plea in both charges of second-degree murder and three counts of second-degree assault during the arraignment.
The charges arise from a disturbing episode on May 23, when Johnson allegedly discharged a firearm multiple times outside an apartment complex in Skyway, a suburb of Seattle. One of the bullets tragically found its way into a nearby apartment, fatally wounding a 10-year-old girl who was sleeping.
Deputies from King County were quick to respond to the incident at the Creston Point Apartments after reports of gunfire were registered. Upon arrival, they discovered the young victim in her bed, suffering from a gunshot injury to the head. She was urgently transported to Harborview Medical Center for medical attention.
Despite the efforts to save her, the young girl succumbed to her injuries two days later, leaving a community in mourning and sparking outcry over gun violence affecting innocents. At the time of the tragic event, the victim was in bed alongside her two siblings, adding to the gravitas of the ordeal recounted by her distraught mother to law enforcement officers.
Investigations into the shooting indicated Johnson and several others as participants, identified through surveillance footage, physical evidence from the scene, and activities on social media platforms. Initial findings suggest that the shooting erupted following a disagreement over the purchase price of marijuana involving a group of juveniles.
Eyewitnesses interviewed by police shared that the disagreement escalated, leading Johnson to allegedly fire multiple shots into the air, though, fortunately, no other individuals sustained injuries during the incident.
During the court session where Johnson’s plea was heard, the presiding judge issued a stringent order prohibiting Johnson from contacting the victim’s family or returning to the scene of the shooting. His bond was set at a substantial $2 million, reflecting the severity of the charges against him.
Johnson’s legal proceedings are scheduled to continue with a trial set for late October, following a pre-trial conference in late September.
