DETROIT — Three adults were killed in a shooting outside a Detroit gas station early Sunday after a crash and a fight led to gunfire, police said. Officers responded at about 3 a.m. to the 21700 block of McNichols Road, where investigators said the confrontation turned deadly.
Detroit police said the shooting began after a physical altercation tied to a prior crash, though key details remained unclear Sunday, including where the crash happened, how many vehicles were involved and what set off the dispute. The killings left three people dead at the scene or shortly after, according to police, and investigators said a suspect was in custody as they continued sorting out what happened in the hours before sunrise.
The shooting unfolded outside a gas station on Detroit’s west side, where police said officers were called for reports of a triple shooting. Investigators said the violence came after a crash and then an altercation. By Sunday morning, authorities had confirmed that all three victims were adults, but had not released their ages or names. Police also had not said how many people were part of the confrontation before shots were fired. The lack of detail left several basic questions unanswered as homicide investigators worked to reconstruct the sequence of events from the crash to the fight to the gunfire.
A second local report identified the location as a Sunoco at West McNichols and Lahser. That report said surveillance video from the station showed two cars pulling in before the shooting. The video showed several people getting out of a black car and moving toward an orange Dodge Charger before the footage cut off just before the gunfire, according to the station’s account. Police had not publicly described that video in detail by Sunday, and investigators had not said whether everyone seen in the footage was directly involved in the clash. Authorities also had not said whether the suspect and the victims knew one another before the crash.
As detectives continued their work, the case quickly drew attention because of the number of people killed and the public setting. Gas stations and busy intersections are common gathering points on Detroit’s west side, and the shooting happened in the early-morning hours when fewer witnesses may have been nearby but surveillance equipment may still have captured key moments. The public account from police remained narrow: a crash happened, a fight followed and three people were shot to death. With identities still largely unreleased, much of the human toll was still emerging through grieving relatives and community members rather than official statements.
Police said a suspect was in custody, but they had not announced charges Sunday or released a name. Investigators also had not said whether the person was arrested at the scene, surrendered later or was found through witness interviews or video evidence. Those decisions now move into a procedural stage that usually includes case review by prosecutors, possible charging recommendations and the release of additional facts through court records or police briefings. Officials said more information would be released as it becomes available, signaling that the investigation was still in its early stages less than a day after the shooting.
The scene also drew voices from outside law enforcement. WXYZ reported that Pastor Maurice “Mo” Hardwick of the Live in Peace Movement went to the station Sunday and spoke about the cost of violence. “That car, whatever if it was tapped, hit, I don’t care if it was crashed and totaled, it’s not worth three people lives,” Hardwick said. His comments underscored the suddenness of the killings and the way a traffic-related dispute can spill into a deadly public confrontation. Family and friends also began identifying victims, with WXYZ reporting that two of the dead were 25-year-old Trevor Sheeler and his sister.
The case remained under investigation Sunday, with police holding a suspect and withholding many of the central details. The next major step is likely a charging decision or a more detailed police update identifying the victims and clarifying how the crash led to the shooting.
