3 shot inside home after late-night argument; one in critical condition

Deputies said a disturbance at the front of the residence came before the gunfire.

HOUSTON, Texas — Two men and a woman were taken to the hospital early Wednesday after a shooting at a home in north Harris County, where deputies said a disturbance at the entrance of the residence escalated into gunfire just after 1 a.m.

Investigators were still working to sort out what sparked the shooting and whether the gunfire came from inside the home, outside, or both. The three victims survived, but one was reported in critical condition, raising the stakes for detectives who must quickly gather witness accounts, preserve evidence and determine whether any suspect fled or remains in the area.

Deputies with the Harris County Sheriff’s Office were sent to the 2000 block of Bertrand Lane near Aldine Westfield Road after a life-in-danger call around 1 a.m. When they arrived, they found two men and a woman suffering from gunshot wounds, authorities said. Paramedics took all three to a hospital. One person was listed in critical condition while the other two were reported in stable condition, according to deputies. The sheriff’s office did not immediately release the ages of the victims or say whether they lived at the home.

Early accounts from the initial investigation pointed to a confrontation at the front of the house shortly before shots were fired. Deputies said “there was a disturbance at the entrance of the residence before shots were fired,” but they did not describe what that disturbance looked like or who was involved. It was not clear whether the people who were shot were part of that disturbance or whether they were inside the residence when the gunfire started. Authorities did not say how many shots were fired, what kind of weapon was used or whether investigators recovered a gun at the scene.

The shooting occurred in a pocket of north Harris County where homes and small streets sit close to major roads that carry heavy late-night traffic. Bertrand Lane runs near Aldine Westfield Road, a corridor that connects neighborhoods to nearby commercial areas and major highways. Deputies did not release the name of the subdivision or describe the layout of the property where the gunfire occurred, such as whether the home has a front porch, driveway gate or shared access with neighboring houses. Investigators also did not say whether neighbors called 911 after hearing shots or whether the life-in-danger call came from someone at the residence.

In the hours after the shooting, the sheriff’s office had not announced any arrests or identified a suspect. Detectives typically try to reconstruct the sequence of events by interviewing the wounded once doctors allow, speaking with anyone who was present during the disturbance, and checking nearby camera footage that might show vehicles or people arriving and leaving. Investigators also look for physical evidence that can clarify where the shooter stood, including shell casings, bullet strikes and any signs of a struggle at the entrance. Officials did not say whether they believed the gunfire was tied to an ongoing dispute, a robbery attempt or some other confrontation.

Residents near the scene woke to the news that three people had been shot just after midnight in what deputies described as a disturbance at the front of a home. In neighborhoods where homes sit close together, gunfire can be difficult to place, and investigators often rely on small details: a neighbor who saw headlights pull up, a door camera that caught a moment of shouting, or a witness who noticed someone running after the shots. Deputies did not say whether the shooting involved people who knew one another, but they described the incident as beginning with a disturbance rather than a random exchange on the street.

By midmorning Wednesday, authorities had not released an updated condition report on the person listed as critical, and they did not say when they expected to provide additional information. Detectives were continuing interviews and evidence collection, and the next milestone is an update from investigators once they determine how the disturbance began and who fired the shots.
