Chelmsford, United Kingdom – A 71-year-old man was sentenced to eight years in prison after attempting to murder his son-in-law with a meat cleaver, an assault that unfolded before the eyes of his three-year-old granddaughter. The incident, which took place in Chelmsford last year, left the victim with severe injuries and enduring psychological scars.
Chacko Abraham Thenakarayil, the assailant, faced trial at Chelmsford Crown Court where a jury convicted him of attempted murder following a two-week deliberation ending on June 26. This grave event has rocked the local community and highlights a shocking breach of family trust.
On May 6, amidst a seemingly peaceful home setting, Thenakarayil attacked his son-in-law from behind as he sat at the dining table with his young daughter. Using a meat cleaver, Thenakarayil inflicted a serious wound to the back of the victim’s head. Despite the initial shock and injury, the son-in-law managed to wrestle the cleaver away. However, Thenakaryil then escalated the attack by arming himself with another knife in an attempt to continue his assault.
The victim’s perilous situation forced him to flee his home and seek refuge with neighbors, who found Thenakaryil still armed and threatening further violence. The intervention of these neighbors likely prevented further injury or a fatal outcome.
The victim was quickly transported to the hospital where it was determined that he had lost approximately 500ml of blood and suffered a fractured skull. Even months after the assault, the victim expressed ongoing trauma, plagued by flashbacks and fears of another attack. Such was his distress that additional security measures, including locks and surveillance cameras, were installed at his home as preventative steps against potential future threats.
During the sentencing, the judge pronounced Thenakarayil’s actions as a “spontaneous attempt to kill,” motivated by selfish reasons and lacking any provocation from the victim, who had shown nothing but kindness towards his father-in-law.
Detective Sergeant Louis Moore commented on the lasting impact of the assault, emphasizing the significant psychological and physical toll on the victim and describing the near-fatal nature of the attack. Moore expressed hope that the sentence might offer a measure of closure to the victim and allow him to move forward.
The family has been profoundly affected by this tragedy, grappling with the ramifications of such violence within their home. This incident not only resulted in physical harm but also shattered the foundation of trust and safety that every familial relationship relies upon.
Legal experts suggest that this case underscores the importance of addressing underlying issues within familial relationships that might escalate into violence. Moreover, it highlights the necessity for swift legal and psychological support for victims of domestic violence to aid in their recovery and to prevent further trauma.
As the community reflects on this harrowing event, there is an overarching call for increased awareness and preventive strategies to tackle domestic violence, ensuring that homes remain safe havens and not battlegrounds.
