PHOENIX, Arizona — In a dramatic resolution to a case that has haunted Phoenix for two decades, Sergio Reyes, 37, was arrested on charges linked to the 2004 murder of 15-year-old Elena Lasswell, authorities confirmed. Reyes, who was identified as a suspect ten years after the tragic event, was extradited from Mexico and booked into Maricopa County Jail this Wednesday.
The arrest coincides with the 20th anniversary of the day Lasswell was found murdered in her home, a moment that Phoenix police and the victim’s family have awaited for years. Detective Dominick Roestenberg remarked on the significance of the arrest, noting the relentless effort over the years to bring the suspect to justice. “They’ve been waiting 20 years for justice. It took a while, but through perseverance and hard work and dedication, we were able to get Sergio Reyes back to Phoenix to face charges,” Roestenberg said.
For years after Lasswell’s murder, detectives struggled to find concrete leads. It wasn’t until 2012 that advanced DNA techniques allowed them to identify a profile that matched Reyes, culminating in his identification as the primary suspect. The following year, Reyes was indicted by a Maricopa County Grand Jury while he still resided in Mexico.
