After Two Decades, Suspect Arrested for 2004 Murder of Arizona Teenager

PHOENIX, Arizona — In a dramatic resolution to a case that has haunted Phoenix for two decades, Sergio Reyes, 37, was arrested on charges linked to the 2004 murder of 15-year-old Elena Lasswell, authorities confirmed. Reyes, who was identified as a suspect ten years after the tragic event, was extradited from Mexico and booked into Maricopa County Jail this Wednesday.

The arrest coincides with the 20th anniversary of the day Lasswell was found murdered in her home, a moment that Phoenix police and the victim’s family have awaited for years. Detective Dominick Roestenberg remarked on the significance of the arrest, noting the relentless effort over the years to bring the suspect to justice. “They’ve been waiting 20 years for justice. It took a while, but through perseverance and hard work and dedication, we were able to get Sergio Reyes back to Phoenix to face charges,” Roestenberg said.

For years after Lasswell’s murder, detectives struggled to find concrete leads. It wasn’t until 2012 that advanced DNA techniques allowed them to identify a profile that matched Reyes, culminating in his identification as the primary suspect. The following year, Reyes was indicted by a Maricopa County Grand Jury while he still resided in Mexico.

Law enforcement’s pursuit of justice didn’t falter despite the international complexities of the case. Working in collaboration with the U.S. Marshals Service, Phoenix detectives succeeded in locating Reyes in Mexico where he was living and orchestrated his extradition back to the United States.

Upon his return, Reyes faced a slew of charges including first-degree murder during a crime, premeditated murder, sexual assault, second-degree burglary, and kidnapping. With a bond set at $1.5 million, he awaits a court appearance scheduled for July 17.

The revival of this cold case brings a surge of emotions and a promise of closure for the Lasswell family. Lasswell’s tragic death had shocked the community and remained a source of sorrow. With Reyes’ arrest, both the police and the community hope to turn a painful chapter while highlighting the importance of perseverance in seeking justice, no matter how much time has elapsed.

As the legal process progresses, the spotlight on this case also underscores the evolving role of forensic technology in solving crimes. Phoenix police now hope that this breakthrough serves as a deterrent to criminals and reassures families of other victims that justice may be delayed, but it is never denied.
