RIVERHEAD, N.Y. – Rex Heuermann, the alleged serial killer accused of murdering three women, is set to appear in court on Tuesday to face potential charges in the death of a fourth woman. The new charges come as Heuermann, 60, currently faces charges for the killings of three other women, all of whom were found wrapped in burlap in close proximity on Long Island.
Authorities have identified Maureen Brainard-Barnes as the potential fourth victim, whose remains were found in a marshy spot near Gilgo Beach. Heuermann has already pleaded not guilty to the murders of Megan Waterman, Melissa Barthelemy, and Amber Costello, all of whom were found deceased in December 2010. He is currently being held without bail.
Prosecutors are expected to formally announce the indictment of Heuermann in the death of Brainard-Barnes during his upcoming court appearance in Riverhead. Authorities have linked Heuermann to the victims, who were all sex workers, through DNA evidence, including a sample taken from a pizza crust found in the trash outside his Manhattan office.
In addition to these four cases, there are six other victims from the Gilgo Beach area whose deaths remain unsolved, adding to the complexity of the investigation.
