Walter Pozos is accused in a 2023 chase that killed his passenger and injured a homeowner.
HOUSTON, Texas — A Harris County murder defendant accused of causing a deadly crash while fleeing deputies is being sought after authorities said he removed his GPS ankle monitor days before his retrial was set to begin.
Walter Pozos, 32, had been scheduled to face a second murder trial last Wednesday after a February mistrial. Court records show his bond has been revoked and multiple warrants have been issued after he failed to appear in court.
Records say Pozos removed his court ordered monitor May 11, two days before jury proceedings were expected to start. Pretrial services received a tamper alert and left him a voicemail telling him to report for an inspection. Investigators said he did not respond.
Pozos is charged in a July 2023 crash in north Harris County that killed his passenger, Hector Castilleja Correa. Deputies said Pozos was intoxicated and driving more than 100 mph during a chase that stretched more than 12 miles before he lost control and crashed into a home.
The crash also injured homeowner Maria Garcia, who was struck in the head by flying debris. Garcia told ABC13 that she still suffers from headaches. She and her husband said they do not understand how Pozos was able to disappear while under electronic monitoring.
The case comes after another Harris County murder defendant, Lee Gilley, was accused of removing an ankle monitor and fleeing the country. Gilley, who is accused of killing his pregnant wife, Christa Gilley, was later captured in Italy after authorities said he used a fake passport.
After Gilley’s flight, Pretrial Services said it was committed to refining its protocols so courts could be alerted in a more near real time manner when someone tampers with a monitor. ABC13 reported that it requested more details about the Pozos timeline but did not receive a response.
Pozos remained out of jail on bond after the mistrial earlier this year. His next court step is now tied to his arrest, the active warrants and the revoked bond order.
