PROVO, Utah — A 2025 trial date has been set for Kent Cody Barlow, who is facing charges for a tragic crash that claimed the lives of two three-year-old boys, after several delays in the case. Fourth District Judge Derek Pullan affirms that the scheduled trial beginning on April 14 will proceed unless unforeseen compelling circumstances arise, urging legal teams to prepare accordingly.
The devastating incident occurred on May 2, 2022, when Barlow allegedly drove through a stop sign at high speed, causing the vehicle to launch off the road and into Cedar Valley Stables where Odin Jeffrey Ratliff and Hunter Charlie Jackson were playing in a horse corral.
Passengers who were in the car at the time have testified that the vehicle was traveling fast and lost control after hitting a bump, leading to the fatal accident. This testimony plays a crucial role in the prosecution’s case against Barlow.
Further complicating the legal proceedings, Barlow’s legal representation has seen significant changes. His current attorney, Justin Morrison, has decided not to challenge the admissibility of certain key evidence which includes a 911 call immediately following the crash, various items recovered from the crash site, and DNA evidence on a belt buckle. Morrison has also announced his intention to bring 11 expert witnesses to the stand, a record number for him in a trial setting.
Despite the defense team’s readiness, there are still a few contentious motions pending. These include debates over the display of images of the young victims during the trial, which the defense argues could bias jurors, and a motion requesting the dismissal of charges against Barlow.
Barlow, who is 28 years old, faces severe legal consequences with two counts of murder as first-degree felonies and an additional charge of possession of a controlled substance as a class A misdemeanor.
In a recent development, Judge Pullan has confirmed that the Utah County Public Defenders Association will continue to represent Barlow. Issues regarding resource availability and preparedness were raised by Barlow’s prior defense, but reassurances have been given that the current team will be ready by the April 2025 trial date.
The case’s progression will again be evaluated in an upcoming court session on Dec. 19, where the remaining motions will be addressed, potentially impacting the trial’s proceedings and focus.
