Assault Suspect at Braid SkyTrain Station in New Westminster Receives 10-Year Prison Sentence

New Westminster, British Columbia – A man has been sentenced to 10 years in prison for a violent assault on a SkyTrain attendant at the Braid SkyTrain station. The Metro Vancouver Transit Police revealed that the sentence is related to an attack that occurred on July 5, 2021, where a suspect assaulted a SkyTrain attendant, causing bodily harm and forcible confinement.

The incident took place as the attendant was leaving a room at the Braid station, only to be shoved back inside by the suspect, who proceeded to violently attack her. Despite the ordeal, the brave attendant managed to fight off the attacker and call for help, eventually escaping the room.

The assailant, identified as Howard Geddes Skelding, 29, was apprehended at the scene by Transit Police officers and has been in custody until his recent court date on May 2, 2024. Following the trial, Skelding was found guilty of assault causing bodily harm and forcible confinement, leading to his sentencing of 10 years in prison.

Const. Amanda Steed of the Transit Police commended the attendant for her courage and resilience in facing her attacker and participating in the legal proceedings. Steed also acknowledged the efforts of Crown counsel in securing a significant sentence for the perpetrator.

Despite suffering a laceration and various soft tissue injuries during the assault, the SkyTrain attendant is reported to be recovering well, although the emotional trauma of the incident continues to impact her. Support systems, including Victim Services, her employer BC Rapid Transit, the General Investigation Unit, and her family, have been instrumental in her recovery process.
