Craigavon, United Kingdom – A man from Lurgan has been sentenced to jail after a brutal assault on his ex-girlfriend, leaving her with a 7cm laceration to her head. Simon Andrew Taylor, 38, carried out the attack in a drunken state, causing his victim to go in and out of consciousness during the assault. The incident took place at a property in Trasna Way, where the couple had been residing.
Initially facing a more serious charge of Section 18 assault/wounding, Taylor pleaded guilty to a lesser charge of Section 20 assault. However, due to the victim’s change in attitude and desire to move forward, the prosecution accepted the lesser charge. The court heard that on June 18, at 2:20 am, police responded to a call at the shared residence.
The victim described a night of drinking that escalated into violence, with Taylor becoming increasingly aggressive. A heated argument led to Taylor assaulting the victim with a wine glass, followed by choking and repeated physical harm. The victim endured a terrifying ordeal as Taylor continued his vicious attack, leaving her in fear for her life.
Taylor’s defense claimed his actions were influenced by his intoxicated state, exacerbated by emotional turmoil due to a family anniversary. Despite this explanation, Taylor received a 12-month custodial sentence, followed by 16 months on license. With credit for time served on remand, Taylor is expected to be released before summer.
The victim, deeply impacted by the assault, described the incident as a life-altering experience that left her trapped in a state of depression. The court acknowledged the severity of the assault, emphasizing the lasting effects on the victim’s physical and mental well-being. Judge Patrick Lynch KC delivered the sentence, underscoring the consequences of Taylor’s violent actions.
As the victim continues to recover from the trauma inflicted by Taylor, the case serves as a reminder of the serious repercussions of domestic violence. The legal system’s response to such incidents plays a crucial role in ensuring justice for victims and holding perpetrators accountable for their actions. Through proper prosecution and sentencing, the law aims to protect individuals from harm and provide support for those affected by violence.
