Mays Landing, N.J. — A 64-year-old Atlantic City man has pleaded guilty to second-degree aggravated assault in a domestic violence case that shocked the community. Derrick Lewis entered his plea before Judge Dorothy Garrabrant on December 5, following incidents that took place earlier this year.
The plea agreement is expected to lead to a five-year prison sentence, with the stipulation that Lewis will not be eligible for parole for 85% of that time, as mandated by the No Early Release Act. This law aims to address the serious nature of violent crimes, particularly those involving domestic abuse.
The case stems from a June 28 incident when Atlantic City Police responded to reports of an assault on the 1500 block of Atlantic Avenue. Upon arrival, officers spoke with the victim, who recounted a harrowing encounter in which Lewis physically attacked her, delivering multiple blows to her face and ribs, and even strangling her inside her vehicle.
In a desperate attempt to escape the situation, the victim managed to exit the vehicle and sought help from a nearby bystander. Authorities reported that Lewis fled the scene prior to law enforcement’s arrival but was apprehended later the same day.
The vigilance of the bystander and the rapid response of the police were crucial in ensuring the victim’s safety and bringing Lewis into custody. Domestic violence cases often highlight the need for community awareness and intervention.
