Kolkata, India: The National Investigation Agency (NIA) has defended its recent actions in the Bhupatinagar area of West Bengal, stating that the attack on its officers was unprovoked. The agency refuted allegations of unlawful behavior made by the Trinamool Congress (TMC) and emphasized the legality of its actions pertaining to an investigation into a bomb explosion that resulted in three deaths in Naruabila village.
According to the NIA, the incident, which dates back to December 2022, is under investigation following the instructions of the Calcutta High Court. The agency stated that its team was violently attacked by a mob while conducting searches in Naruabila village, in connection with the aforementioned explosion. The search operations were carried out at multiple locations under the supervision of independent witnesses and CRPF security personnel, during which arrests were made following all lawful procedures.
The NIA revealed that two individuals, Manobrata Jana and Bailicharan Maity, were arrested for their involvement in the crude bomb explosion case. The agency pointed out that the duo had ignored repeated summons to join the investigation, leading to legal action being taken. An NIA official sustained injuries during the attack by the crowd, and the agency’s vehicle was damaged, prompting a complaint to be filed at the local police station for necessary legal action against the attackers.
In its official statement, the NIA emphasized that its actions were legitimate and mandated by law, denouncing the accusations of mala fide intent. The agency reiterated its commitment to carrying out its duties in accordance with the law and upheld the arrests made during the operation. The NIA further highlighted that the arrests were made following a court order that deemed the allegations against the suspects as very serious in nature.
The incident in Bhupatinagar has sparked a debate surrounding the NIA’s operations and its interactions with local authorities and communities. The agency’s response to the allegations and its stance on the legality of its actions have added fuel to the ongoing discussion about the role of investigative agencies in sensitive cases. As investigations into the bomb explosion continue, the NIA remains firm in defending its actions and ensuring that justice is served in the pursuit of truth.
