BUTLER COUNTY, Ohio — A 41-year-old man faces multiple charges after allegedly attempting to murder a deputy sheriff who responded to a suspicious fire in Madison Township. Phillip Lovely is being held at the Middletown City Jail and is scheduled to appear in court Friday afternoon.
According to the Butler County Sheriff’s Office, Deputy Mike Farthing was dispatched shortly after noon on Thursday to investigate a vehicle fire on Myers Road. Upon arrival, Farthing encountered Lovely, who is accused of stabbing the deputy with a knife before he could secure the scene. The incident escalated quickly when Lovely reportedly warned the deputy, stating, “This is your unlucky day,” right before the attack.
Sheriff Richard Jones described the weapon involved as a butcher knife with a blade measuring between 8 to 10 inches. Despite being injured, Deputy Farthing managed to maintain control of the situation by holding Lovely at gunpoint until backup arrived. Dispatchers were alerted that Farthing had been attacked, and he worked to subdue Lovely even as they both struggled on the ground.
Bystanders played a key role in de-escalating the situation when Lovely’s uncle intervened and persuaded him to drop the knife, which could have otherwise led to further violence. Both men were transported to Atrium Medical Center in Middletown for treatment, with the deputy’s injuries being serious but not life-threatening.
After receiving medical attention, Lovely was charged with attempted murder of a law enforcement officer, felonious assault, and arson. The Butler County Prosecutor’s Office has begun an investigation and is preparing the case for review by a grand jury.
