Aurora, Colorado – Authorities have arrested a man in connection with a violent sexual assault that took place last May along the High Line Canal Trail within Expo Park. The incident, which left the victim with serious injuries, occurred early in the morning on May 8. The woman reported that she was attacked from behind while walking on the trail.
In a display of resilience, the woman managed to fend off her assailant, who fled the scene. She credited prior self-defense training for her ability to escape. In a reflection on the harrowing encounter, she recalled her instinct to fight back, stating, “I thought, ‘I can’t fight him standing up, I’ll take him to the ground. I am not going to die today.'”
Following the assault, the Aurora Police Department appealed to the public for assistance in identifying a suspect captured on nearby security cameras. The investigation stalled until an anonymous tipster recognized the individual featured in a news report and identified him as Jack Khaidav. After receiving this information, police visited Khaidav’s home, where his mother confirmed the identity of the man in the footage.
Khaidav was taken into custody earlier this week by the department’s sex crimes unit. According to court documents, he confessed to being the attacker and mentioned struggling with anger issues. He also noted that he had been drinking with friends on the night of the incident. He is currently being held at the Arapahoe County Jail without bond, with his initial court appearance set for February 3.
Investigations Bureau Commander Marc Paolino praised the persistent efforts of the sex crimes unit in bringing Khaidav into custody. “Cases like this require patience, precision, and an unwavering commitment to victims,” he said, emphasizing their focus on ensuring justice for those affected by such crimes.
The community has welcomed the developments in the case, reflecting on the importance of vigilance and support for victims of violence. Local officials reiterated their commitment to public safety and encouraged residents to remain alert while using trails and parks in the area.
As the legal proceedings begin, the case serves as a reminder of the ongoing challenges faced by law enforcement in tackling sexual violence and the critical role that community awareness plays in securing justice for victims.
