Residents said the pregnant woman and her husband had appeared happy as they prepared to welcome their first child.
LOS ANGELES — Six days after neighbors said a Westwood couple celebrated their expected first child at a baby shower, the pregnant woman and a man were found shot to death inside their home in a suspected murder-suicide.
Los Angeles police responded to the 1300 block of Holmby Avenue at about 5:40 a.m. Friday after a neighbor reported hearing gunshots. Officers found the man and woman with fatal wounds, and Los Angeles Fire Department personnel pronounced them dead at the scene.
Police have not released their identities or officially confirmed their relationship. Neighbors interviewed by KTLA described them as husband and wife and said the woman was about eight and a half months pregnant.
Neighbor Rich Schultz, who lives three doors away, said the couple had held a well-attended baby shower on July 4. He said they were preparing for the birth of their first child and had not appeared troubled during routine encounters in the neighborhood.
“They seemed like a pretty happy couple, talking, walking hand-in-hand,” Schultz told the television station.
Schultz said nothing he saw before the deaths suggested that violence was imminent. “Nothing seemed amiss,” he said, adding that neighbors did not know what may have been happening privately.
The accounts offered a limited picture of the couple’s public life but did not establish what occurred inside the home. Police had not announced a motive or disclosed whether investigators had found any earlier reports of trouble involving the residence.
Preliminary evidence suggested the man shot the woman and then died by suicide, an LAPD spokesperson told the Los Angeles Times. The department continued to investigate the deaths as a possible murder-suicide rather than announcing a final finding.
Friends and neighbors gathered near the scene Friday as detectives examined the home and worked to reconstruct the events leading to the shooting. Authorities did not say whether anyone else witnessed the deaths or was present when the gunfire began.
The names of the man and woman remained withheld Saturday. Official causes and manners of death, along with further information about the woman’s pregnancy, were awaiting confirmation from the appropriate authorities as the police investigation continued.
