Bhilwara, India — A violent altercation between two political rivals led to a series of arrests on Sunday, highlighting the escalating tensions within the local political landscape. Balu Lal Acharya, a member of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), along with his son, nephew, and an associate, was taken into custody following a brutal attack on Harphool Jat, a former Congress sarpanch of Halede.
The confrontation occurred late Saturday night near Sarkari Darwaza, where Jat was assaulted using a sword and an iron rod. He was subsequently hospitalized at Mahatma Gandhi Hospital due to the severity of his injuries. This incident appears to be retaliation following a prior conflict between Jat and Acharya, who have a fraught history of political rivalry.
According to local authorities, the attack may also have involved gunfire, and police are currently probing Jat’s claims regarding shots being fired during the incident. The Bhilwara police acted swiftly, leading to the arrest of Acharya and his associates. Authorities are actively searching for a fifth suspect linked to the assault.
Gajendra Singh Naruka, in-charge of the Kotwali police station, confirmed that the attack was carried out by two unidentified individuals on a motorcycle. Earlier tensions had boiled over when Jat allegedly assaulted Acharya, an incident that may have motivated the latest attack as a form of retribution for perceived public humiliation.
In the wake of the altercation, Bhilwara Superintendent of Police Dharmendra Singh ordered an immediate investigation, which has led to the apprehension of Acharya and three other individuals: his son Gopal, nephew Akshay, and associate Manish Salvi. Authorities are continuing their search for Ghanshyam Nayak, another person believed to be connected to the violent episode.
The rivalry between Acharya and Jat is not new; they have clashed over various local issues, including water drainage management at the Halede gram panchayat headquarters. During a previous skirmish over this matter, Jat and his supporters assaulted Acharya, resulting in legal action against the Congress functionary.
On Sunday evening, law enforcement took the arrested individuals to the scene of the attack for identification purposes, parading them through the local market. This move underscores the police’s commitment to addressing the ongoing conflict between these political factions.
As tensions simmer, the incident raises questions about the safety of local politicians and the impact of such violence on the political climate in Bhilwara. Both communities and political parties will be watching closely as the investigation develops.
