MONTECITO, Calif. — A tense situation unfolded Wednesday when law enforcement arrested a Nevada man following a violent attack on a woman at the home of Ty Warner, the billionaire behind Beanie Babies. Russell Maxwell Phay, 43, was taken into custody after a standoff that involved multiple agencies.
The incident began around 4:30 p.m. when deputies from the Santa Barbara County Sheriff’s Office responded to reports of a possible vehicle theft or home invasion in the 1000 block of Fairway Road. Upon arrival, they discovered a woman outside the residence with significant injuries. She was quickly transported to a nearby hospital for treatment.
As deputies secured the area, they learned that Phay was still barricaded inside the home. Concern about the safety of potential additional occupants led to a comprehensive response, including support from the California Highway Patrol, Santa Barbara Police, and aerial units.
With all other individuals confirmed safe, law enforcement focused on negotiating Phay’s surrender. During this time, he was found in an upstairs bathroom. In a dramatic turn, he attempted to escape by jumping from a second-story window. However, he was apprehended on the ground by deputies and a sheriff’s dog shortly thereafter.
Phay, a combat veteran, had allegedly expressed intimidating thoughts about his military background prior to the incident. Following his arrest, he was booked into the Santa Barbara County Main Jail on several serious charges, including felony burglary, assault with a deadly weapon, and kidnapping, along with a misdemeanor obstruction charge. His bail has been set at $100,000.
