Birmingham, Alabama — A shooting incident from September that resulted in the death of a 37-year-old man at a local package store has been deemed justified by the Jefferson County District Attorney’s office, according to Birmingham Police. The determination has shifted the police department’s handling of the case to a justified death investigation.

Late on September 20, 2024, police were dispatched to the Third Avenue Package Store located in the 1500 block of 3rd Avenue West. Upon arrival, they discovered Tremayne Long of Bessemer, fatally wounded and unresponsive on the store’s floor.

Following the collection of evidence and testimonies, law enforcement officials submitted their findings to the Jefferson County District Attorney for evaluation. The DA’s office concluded that the shooting, which occurred during a physical confrontation outside the store, was justifiable under local laws.

According to police accounts, the altercation outside the Third Avenue Package Store escalated, leading to Long being shot. After being injured, Long managed to enter the store where he ultimately collapsed. Emergency medical teams responded and transported him to a nearby hospital where he was later pronounced dead.

Legal experts emphasize the complexities of justified shooting determinations, which hinge on numerous factors including a clear immediate threat and the proportionality of the response to that threat.

Community reactions have been mixed, with some locals expressing concerns about gun violence and the criteria used to justify shootings, while others feel the decision was appropriate given the circumstances outlined by officials.

The Birmingham Police Department continues to investigate this incident and similar cases to ensure community safety and adherence to legal standards.
