Birmingham Police Charge Suspect in Deadly Mass Shooting and Multiple Related Attacks

Birmingham, Ala. — Authorities in Birmingham, Alabama, have arrested 22-year-old Damien McDaniel, implicating him as the main suspect in a mass shooting and other related incidents that rocked the community. Announced by Birmingham Police Chief Scott Thurmond, McDaniel faces charges for three violent incidents, including a mass shooting in the bustling Five Points South entertainment district, which resulted in four fatalities and several injuries.

The September 21 massacre at Five Points South led to charges against McDaniel including capital murder and 17 counts of attempted murder. Just two days prior, Diontranet Brown was fatally shot at the 604 Bar and Lounge on 9th Street N., where McDaniel is also charged with murder. Authorities noted that Brown appeared to be an unintended victim in this act of violence.

Further compounding the series of tragic events, the day following the Five Points South shooting, Jamarcus Desean McIntrye was killed in the 700 block of 81st Place South. Alongside McDaniel, Ny’Quan Lollar, Larry Rollins Jr., and Demarco Beck are charged in connection with McIntrye’s death.

Significantly, McDaniel is linked to all three shooting incidents, distinguishing his involvement as particularly central to the investigation. Meanwhile, Rollins Jr. faces additional charges for trafficking heroin.

The arrests were the culminating result of a robust community response and police investigation, with authorities citing over 300 tips received through Crime Stoppers and the BPD QR code. Chief Thurmond praised the community’s unprecedented cooperation, highlighting its critical role in advancing the investigation. “We’ve never had that many tips in any case before,” Thurmond remarked. “Hats off to the community for sharing that information with us and being willing to share that information with us.”

Birmingham Mayor Randall Woodfin emphasized the city’s commitment to resolving the case and bringing justice to the victims and their families. “After the horrific shooting at Five Points South, we vowed that our priority would be to find, capture, and arrest every person responsible for this heinous and brazen mass shooting,” Woodfin stated. “We told you this is what we’d do, and this is what we did.”

Reflecting the deep scars left by the violence, the latest events have spurred a renewed focus on community safety, illegal firearms, and gang-related activities in the region. Birmingham’s law enforcement continues to advocate for community engagement and vigilance as pivotal to their strategy in deterring future crimes and ensuring public safety, emphasizing that such collaborative efforts are integral to maintaining peace and order in Birmingham’s streets.
