Brooklyn Man Receives 17 Years for Predawn Assault on Elderly Woman in Stuyvesant Heights

Brooklyn, NY — A 44-year-old Brooklyn man has been sentenced to a substantial prison term following a violent assault on an elderly woman. The Brooklyn Supreme Court handed down a verdict of 17 years to life for Leroy Hatcher after he pleaded guilty to charges of attempted first-degree criminal sexual act and first-degree sexual abuse.

The gruesome incident took place in the Stuyvesant Heights neighborhood in the early hours of February 6, 2021, and has since jarred the community. According to court reports, Leroy Hatcher targeted a 62-year-old woman who was en route to her workplace around 5:45 a.m. He attacked her forcefully, threatening her life with a knife while committing the assault in a nearby alley.

The swift action of law enforcement, aided considerably by surveillance video from various locations around Stuyvesant Heights, facilitated Hatcher’s arrest shortly after the crime. A critical piece of evidence was also found at the crime scene — a condom that contained DNA from both Hatcher and the victim, which played a pivotal role in the conviction.

Justice Danny Chun presided over the trial where Hatcher later admitted to his crimes, leading to the recent sentence. During the sentencing, Brooklyn District Attorney Eric Gonzalez condemned the attack as a “horrific and violent” act that “shocks the conscience.” Gonzalez reaffirmed the commitment of his office to addressing sexual violence and enhancing public safety across Brooklyn.

The legal proceedings saw Senior Assistant District Attorney Gwen Barnes and Assistant District Attorney Sherri Litvak representing the prosecution under the guidance of Miss Gregory, Bureau Chief of the District Attorney’s Special Victims Bureau. Their successful prosecution underscores the district’s rigorous stance on such violent and reprehensible offenses.

This case highlights a larger call for community vigilance and law enforcement readiness in Brooklyn, where local authorities continue to combat sexual crimes. Such incidents not only devastate the lives of victims but also deeply impact the communal sense of security, prompting ongoing strategies and interventions aimed at preventing similar crimes.

In response to the incident and its aftermath, local community leaders have amplified their calls for increased street lighting and surveillance in key areas, hoping to deter potential offenders. These enhancements, coupled with community policing initiatives, aim to foster a safer environment for all residents, particularly the most vulnerable.

The sentencing of Leroy Hatcher thus serves not only as closure for the victim and her family but also as a poignant reminder of the ongoing challenges and necessary responses in the fight against urban crime.
