FORT PIERCE, Fla. – A Broward County man is facing charges in connection with the deaths of a state trooper and a truck driver, following a tragic incident during a police chase on Interstate 95.
Michael Addison, 30, has a history of multiple arrests, particularly in Broward County, where he is also wanted on warrants related to aggravated battery and weapons charges.
The chase involving Florida Highway Patrol Trooper James Zachary Fink resulted in a fatal crash, killing Fink and the truck driver on Interstate 95 on a Friday morning.
Authorities have not publicly disclosed Addison’s motive for fleeing from Fink and another state trooper, who chose not to pursue. Records show that Addison’s probation was revoked in May 2022, stemming from an incident in which he allegedly choked his ex-girlfriend in December 2021 and failed to pay probation-related fees.
Court records reveal that Addison was on probation for five years after reaching a plea deal with prosecutors. The deal involved him creating a fake ID using another person’s information and attempting to open debit card accounts with the fraudulent identification, as well as being in possession of keys to a Lexus registered under the victim’s name in October 2020.
In another incident, Addison was accused of stealing iPhones in August 2021 with the help of a co-worker, and police reported that he had received previous trespassing warnings from the Walmart manager.
Prosecutors dropped their case against Addison for these offenses, but details of the disposition remain unclear. They also dropped the battery charges related to a separate incident where Addison allegedly assaulted a woman.
In Miami-Dade County, court records show that Addison received two years of probation as part of a plea deal for weapons charges, including possession on a school campus, in 2019. He also had a three-year probation term after facing burglary and grand theft charges in 2012 in Broward County.
Additionally, Addison has outstanding fines worth thousands of dollars related to these offenses and several traffic violations. Court records also indicate that he was evicted from an apartment in Broward County for owing approximately $2,000 in back rent, while the monthly rent was around $700.
As of Sunday night, Addison is being held in custody without bond in Fort Pierce. The arrest report has not been released by the Florida Highway Patrol or the St. Lucie County Sheriff’s Office.
