MONTEREY, California — A powerful atmospheric river that unleashed heavy rains across California over the weekend has left officials on alert for potential flooding. As the region grapples with the aftermath, the storm has been linked to multiple fatalities, including tragic incidents involving families caught in treacherous conditions.
Among the casualties was a 7-year-old girl who was swept into the ocean at Garrapata State Park. Her body was discovered about a half mile from the location where she vanished while playing with her family as her father, Yuji Hu, attempted to rescue her. The 39-year-old man drowned in the tumultuous waves estimated to be between 15 to 20 feet high. The girl’s mother also faced peril but was rescued by an off-duty lifeguard.
As the storm wreaked havoc, Southern California broke several long-standing rainfall records, surpassing figures from as far back as 1952. Cities such as downtown Los Angeles, along with airports in Long Beach, Burbank, Santa Barbara, and Paso Robles, experienced unprecedented precipitation for the day. The intensity of the rainfall heightened concerns about flash floods and mudslides, especially in areas weakened by recent wildfires.
Mandatory evacuations were issued for communities near burn scars from previous fires, including the Palisades and Eaton fires. In an effort to mitigate flooding risks, workers distributed sandbags in affected neighborhoods like Altadena to help protect properties from potential runoff.
The storm caused further chaos as a boat capsized off the coast near Imperial Beach, resulting in at least four fatalities and leaving others hospitalized. First responders worked diligently to rescue individuals in distress, showcasing the growing danger presented by the stormy seas and flooding.
In the northern part of the state, the atmospheric river caused significant destruction. In Santa Cruz County, a tree collapsed onto a California Highway Patrol vehicle, injuring an officer inside. Additionally, a 71-year-old man lost his life in Sutter County after his vehicle was swept away while attempting to navigate a flooded road.
As heavy rain continued on Monday, officials urged residents to remain vigilant. Many local governments are deploying resources to manage the flooding risk while recovery efforts get underway.
