Camden Hit-and-Run Escalates to Murder Charges After Deliberate Attack Claims Life

Camden, New Jersey – Local authorities have charged a 30-year-old woman, Ajee Williams, with first-degree murder following a fatal hit-and-run incident that claimed the life of 41-year-old Carla Mahan in Camden last week. The collision occurred in the afternoon before 3:30 p.m. on September 25, at the intersection of 7th Street and Tulip Street.

Police at the scene discovered Mahan in a nearby grassy lot. She was promptly transported to Cooper University Hospital where she was subsequently pronounced dead. The intense investigation led to Williams turning herself in to the Camden County police three days later, on September 28.

The calamity unfolded when surveillance footage captured a grey Dodge Durango, later identified as registered to Williams, arriving at the scene around 3:09 p.m. The video depicted a vehicle initially engaging in what appeared to be a brief interaction with a pedestrian near the passenger’s side. Moments later, the pedestrian, Mahan, moved toward the grassy lot, and that’s when tragedy struck.

Authorities described how the vehicle reversed, then accelerated over a curb directly towards the area Mahan was walking, suggesting a deliberate act. Within minutes, by 3:13 p.m., the vehicle hastily left the scene.

Subsequent police investigation into the SUV revealed gruesome evidence. Forensic analysis uncovered human tissue, flesh, and hair beneath the vehicle, confirming the violent nature of the encounter. Further digging into Williams’ activities before the incident revealed that she had been driving with possibly her children, picking them up from school at around 3:05 p.m., mere minutes before the tragic event.

The case has not only shocked the local community but has also raised numerous questions about the circumstances leading up to the incident. The presence of children in the car during such a brutal act adds another layer of complexity and concern to an already disturbing case.

Authorities are urging anyone who may have additional information to come forward. Detective Daniel Crawford from the Homicide Unit of the Camden County Prosecutor’s Office is leading the ongoing investigation. Individuals with any knowledge about the events are encouraged to contact him to assist in bringing clarity and justice for the victim.

This incident has reignited discussions on road safety and pedestrian rights in the area, prompting community leaders and local law enforcement to consider new measures to prevent such occurrences in the future. The tragedy serves as a grim reminder of the deadly consequences that can arise from road rage and the importance of vehicular accountability.

As the investigation continues, the community remains in mourning for Mahan and apprehensive about the safety and security on their streets. The legal proceedings against Williams are being watched closely, as many seek justice for the untimely and tragic death of Carla Mahan.
