Capital’s Nightlife Under Fire: Excise Department Cracks Down on Bars Following Valentine’s Day Assault

Bhubaneswar, India — Following a violent incident at a local bar on Valentine’s Day, the Excise Department has announced an extensive crackdown on bars and pubs in the state capital. Officials are determined to address concerns over public safety and the behavior of bouncers.

Excise Superintendent Debashish Patel emphasized that the department is shifting into enforcement mode. “Regular inspections will be conducted at bars, particularly those operating beyond legal hours,” he stated. The aim is to end the rampant late-night activities, including loud music and overcrowding.

The decision to heighten scrutiny follows an altercation at the OD 02 bar in Kharavel Nagar, where law enforcement encountered hostility from patrons and staff while responding to a disturbance. Officers found about 100 individuals inside the bar after it was supposed to be closed. What escalated the situation further was a confrontation that allegedly involved a group of youths and bouncers, leaving officers physically challenged. The bar’s manager was subsequently arrested, and the legal case is ongoing.

Patel outlined that the department will implement strict measures against establishments not adhering to regulations. In particular, he pointed out that unregulated bouncers are becoming a pressing issue for law enforcement. “Only those security personnel who are licensed and recognized by PSERA will be permitted to work in bars,” he noted, adding a zero-tolerance policy for unauthorized bouncers with criminal records.

Collaborative efforts between the Excise and Police departments are set to intensify, aiming for a synchronized approach to bar operations across the city. Earlier, police guidelines mandated that bars must replace bouncers with security personnel who have undergone proper vetting.

As authorities prepare for this new enforcement strategy, the message is clear: Bhubaneswar’s nightlife is about to undergo its most stringent regulation yet. This crackdown seeks not only to protect patrons but also to uphold public order by ensuring compliance within the entertainment sector.

The increased focus on nightlife safety reflects broader concerns about the role of bars in recent disturbances. With heightened surveillance and stricter enforcement measures, city officials hope to create a safer environment for all residents and visitors. As the situation develops, the community will be watching closely how these changes impact the social landscape of Bhubaneswar.
