KANSAS CITY, Mo. – On Monday, a man remained in critical condition following a carbon monoxide leak over the weekend that resulted in the death of three others. The incident took place on Saturday inside a home near Fuller Avenue and 10th Street, where a generator being used indoors was found to be the cause of the leak, according to Kansas City Fire and Rescue.
The neighborhood affected by the tragedy is predominantly Spanish-speaking, prompting the fire department to take extra steps to ensure that the Hispanic population is informed and educated about the dangers of carbon monoxide. Michael Hopkins, the Fire Chief, emphasized the importance of preventing a trend of similar incidents in the future.
In response, KCFD is taking measures to reach the Spanish-speaking population through various avenues, including distributing pamphlets and handouts to churches, schools, and organizations in the area. Additionally, the fire department plans to collaborate with Spanish radio stations and conduct interviews and public safety announcements with Spanish-speaking members to raise awareness about carbon monoxide detectors and generator safety.
Andrea Garcia, a representative from the Mattie Rhodes Center, stressed the significance of providing information on safety in a non-pushy but accessible way. She discussed the importance of explaining the basics of carbon monoxide and its dangers, as well as the need to provide carbon monoxide detectors to those who may not be aware of where to obtain them.
