Cargo Plane Tragedy: Two Security Workers Killed as Aircraft Skids Off Runway into Sea at Hong Kong Airport

Hong Kong—A tragic accident at Hong Kong International Airport resulted in the deaths of two individuals after a cargo plane lost control during landing. The incident, which occurred early Monday morning, involved a Boeing 747 operated by ACT Airlines and leased to Emirates, leading to a collision with a security patrol vehicle, ultimately sending both into the waters nearby.

The flight originated from Dubai and landed in Hong Kong around 3:50 a.m. local time. Preliminary reports indicate that as the aircraft taxiied approximately halfway down the runway, it veered off to the left and crashed into the security vehicle. The four crew members on board were unharmed during the incident.

Airport officials provided insights into the unfortunate event. Steven Yiu, the executive director of airport operations, noted that the pilots did not request assistance prior to their landing approach. “The patrol car absolutely did not rush onto the runway. It was the plane that went off the runway and crashed into the patrol car outside the fence,” Yiu stated during a news conference.

In the aftermath of the crash, rescuers discovered the aircraft split into two sections, which were afloat in the sea when they arrived. According to fire services official Yiu Men-Yeung, the crew was waiting by the open door of the plane for rescue. However, the two security personnel, who were inside their vehicle, were found trapped after a search lasting around 40 minutes.

Authorities have initiated an investigation into the incident, aiming to understand what led to the plane’s unexpected deviation. This incident raises questions regarding safety protocols at one of the world’s busiest airports and the measures in place to prevent such tragic occurrences.

As the airport resumes operations, officials express condolences to the families affected by this tragedy and emphasize their commitment to uncovering the circumstances surrounding the accident. The airport community remains in shock, grappling with the implications of this incident on safety and security procedures.

Further details regarding the investigation and procedural reviews are expected to be released as authorities continue to gather evidence and assess the situation.
