SPOKANE VALLEY, WA – A serene Sunday morning turned into a scene of chaos as a father and daughter became the targets of a brazen carjacking at a local coffee shop. The suspect’s actions ignited a dramatic chase that would lead to multiple crimes and a fatal conclusion.
The day began quietly at the Whistle Stop Coffee Shop, where owner Jeff Morland anticipated a regular Father’s Day crowd. However, the calm was abruptly disturbed when an armed individual approached a waiting vehicle and commandeered it at gunpoint. The suspect, wielding an AR-15 and a 9mm handgun, fled at speeds exceeding 140 mph on Interstate 90.
Despite law enforcement’s efforts, the suspect evaded capture, prompting reports of another attempted carjacking at Stateline Village. During this incident, the suspect allegedly struck a motorcyclist and commandeered another vehicle. The situation intensified when a good Samaritan was fatally shot while attempting to assist a carjacking victim.
The suspect’s rampage continued back in Spokane Valley, where another carjacking attempt occurred. A dangerous pursuit ensued, with the suspect reportedly firing at officers from the vehicle. The chase reached its climax on Trenton Pines, where the suspect crashed into a civilian car and a Washington State Patrol vehicle.
WSP troopers, already in the vicinity due to a separate crash, managed to intercept the suspect. Following a brief gunfire exchange, the suspect was shot and declared dead at the scene. Authorities praised the prompt and effective response of law enforcement, highlighting the potential risks to both officers and the public.
