Hyderabad, India – Torrential rains have wreaked havoc across Telangana, resulting in fatalities, widespread flooding, and significant disruption to infrastructure. This deluge is reported to be the heaviest in the region in half a century, prompting emergency efforts from local authorities and military personnel.
Tragically, two individuals were swept away in their vehicle near Domakonda, while another person died when a wall collapsed in Kamareddy district. In a separate incident, two villagers from Rajapet were caught in swift waters at a bridge, leaving one confirmed dead and another still unaccounted for as of Thursday evening.
In Rajanna-Sircilla, swift response from the Army led to the rescue of five individuals stranded on a small island, emphasizing the urgent need for intervention as floodwaters surged. State officials announced that over 1,400 residents have been rescued so far, although searches continue for six missing individuals across various towns.
The relentless rainfall has contributed to significant infrastructural damage. A bridge in Yellareddypet mandal was compromised due to heavy inflow, while flooding obstructed transport across several highways. Major disruptions have also impacted train services as a railway track collapsed in Kamareddy.
With many regions receiving upwards of 100 mm of rainfall in a single day, the agricultural sector is bracing for extensive crop losses. Assessments are currently underway to evaluate the full extent of damage to farmland, as large areas remain submerged.
Emergency teams from the State Disaster Response Force (SDRF) and National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) have mobilized to the hardest-hit areas. Approximately 15 SDRF teams and five NDRF teams, supported by 100 Army personnel, are on the ground managing rescues and delivering essential supplies to affected residents.
Local authorities have reported severe flooding in several colonies and neighborhoods, particularly in Kamareddy, where residents are struggling to access basic necessities. Traffic has also been severely affected, with heavy vehicles diverted from flooded routes, and emergency measures have been implemented to reroute public transit.
In Nizamabad, the breach of a local lake has led to the evacuation of approximately 200 families from affected neighborhoods, showcasing the multifaceted challenges posed by the disaster. Officials have declared alerts across multiple zones, monitoring water levels at critical points.
