Balanga, Philippines — A Catholic bishop voiced profound sadness Friday following reports of two Filipino seafarers presumed dead in a violent attack near the Red Sea. Bishop Ruperto Santos, who leads Stella Maris Philippines, emphasized the perilous circumstances that overseas Filipino workers face, particularly those stationed in areas of conflict.
“We are heartbroken over the tragic loss of two lives in this violent incident involving a commercial vessel,” Bishop Santos stated. He extended sincere condolences to the victims’ families, underscoring the collective grief that resonates throughout the Filipino community.
The Department of Foreign Affairs confirmed that a Houthi assault on a cargo ship resulted in the fears for the lives of the seafarers, while five of the 21 crew members from the Philippines had been rescued. The bishop highlighted the courage and conscientiousness of these maritime workers, who often go unnoticed yet significantly contribute to the global economy.
“Filipino seafarers and migrant workers serve with dedication and resilience,” Santos remarked. “We cannot let their pain fade into obscurity, nor their sacrifices be forgotten.” He called for a thorough investigation into the incident and urged the Philippine government to provide support for the families affected.
In addition to offering condolences, Santos advocated for regular updates on the situation. He emphasized the necessity of collaboration with international agencies to ensure those accountable are brought to justice and to enhance protections for overseas workers.
The bishop expressed concern over the broader threats facing Filipino expatriates, particularly those in regions experiencing ongoing conflict, including the situation in Israel and Palestine. “It is imperative for our government to act decisively,” he said, calling for discernment and proactive measures.
Santos urged the immediate readiness of repatriation options for those who feel at risk. “The safety and well-being of our compatriots must come first,” he added, emphasizing that avenues for repatriation must be readily available, especially for individuals feeling unsafe amid escalating violence.
In light of this tragic event, the call for enhanced safety measures and government responsiveness highlights the ongoing challenges faced by overseas workers in perilous conditions around the world. The need for vigilance and unwavering support from authorities remains paramount.
