Nashik, India — A violent confrontation erupted at Nashik Road Central Prison on Saturday morning when two inmates, currently serving time for murder, assaulted correctional officers during a routine security check. The local police have since filed charges against the prisoners for their involvement in the incident.
The altercation took place at approximately 9 a.m. as guards were conducting frisks on inmates to ensure the safety and security of the facility. It was during these searches that Salim alias Paapya Khwaja Shaikh and Tabrej alias Tabbu Darvesh Khan reportedly turned violent, attacking the officers present.
Further complicating the matter, it was reported that Khan was in possession of a small knife, which he used to inflict a self-inflicted wound to his neck during the scuffle. Despite the chaos, the prison staff managed to subdue both individuals swiftly, preventing further violence.
Authorities indicated the injuries sustained by Khan were minor. The police have charged Shaikh and Khan under multiple sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), including assault, intentional insult, criminal intimidation, and actions under common intention.
This is not the first instance of violence at this prison, which houses roughly 2,700 inmates. Past reports have noted several altercations involving inmates and guards, highlighting ongoing concerns about safety and control within the facility.
Local law enforcement and prison officials are currently reviewing security protocols at Nashik Road Central Prison to prevent future incidents. This includes assessing how contraband such as knives are smuggled into the prison and evaluating the effectiveness of inmate searches.
The community and families of the inmates have expressed concern over the recurring violence and the general state of safety in the prison. Social activists and criminal justice reform advocates are calling for thorough investigations and reforms to address the root causes of such incidents.
Officials have reassured the public that measures are being taken to enhance the security and well-being of both staff and inmates in Nashik Road Central Prison. These efforts include increased surveillance, more rigorous searches, and enhanced training for correctional officers.
As the legal proceedings against Shaikh and Khan begin, many are watching closely, hoping that this incident will spur significant improvements in prison management and inmate rehabilitation strategies to ensure a safer environment for all involved.
