Kumasi, Ghana — The Ashanti Regional Police are investigating a violent confrontation that occurred recently in the Bepotenten Sukuum area, where a patrol team was attacked by a large group of civilians. The incident on January 23 unfolded after police officers recovered a pump-action shotgun from a 15-year-old boy during their routine patrol.
Following the weapon’s seizure, officers instructed the boy to notify the gun’s owner to present themselves at the police station with the appropriate documentation. While returning from this operation, the patrol encountered approximately 100 individuals who obstructed the roadway, and tensions quickly escalated.
Reports indicate that some members of the gathered crowd were armed with cutlasses and firearms. In a chaotic turn of events, the crowd launched an attack on the officers, managing to seize one of their service rifles during the altercation. In an effort to regain control of the situation, police fired shots, resulting in injuries to both the individual who took the rifle and another bystander.
The situation was ultimately resolved with the officers reclaiming their weapon, but not before significant chaos ensued. The Assistant Commissioner of Police for the Ashanti Region expressed grave concerns regarding the attack, emphasizing the dangers posed by such incidents to law enforcement efforts.
In a firm statement, the police command urged the public to refrain from violent confrontations with law enforcement, asserting that any aggression toward officers undermines the rule of law. Authorities indicated they would take measures to identify everyone involved in the assault, promising that those responsible would face legal consequences.
Local communities are reminded of the importance of cooperation with police, particularly in matters concerning public safety and the possession of firearms. The police insist on the necessity of maintaining peaceful interactions, highlighting that violence only serves to exacerbate tensions and compromise community safety.
As investigations continue, the Ashanti Regional Police are likely to heighten their presence in the area to prevent further incidents and to foster a sense of security among residents.
