Boston police faced a chaotic scene early Sunday morning as a large crowd descended upon the intersection of Massachusetts Avenue and Tremont Street, attacking police vehicles and engaging in unlawful behavior. The disturbance, described by authorities as a “vehicle takeover,” involved over 100 individuals who obstructed traffic while hurling various objects at marked police cruisers.
Officers were called to the area shortly after 2 a.m. in response to reports of a significant disruption. Upon arrival, they found vehicles blocking the roadways and crowds of people actively vandalizing police property. It soon escalated into a dangerous situation, with fireworks and other projectiles being thrown at the cruisers.
The situation rapidly deteriorated as one police vehicle sustained severe damage from repeated fireworks attacks, leading to smoke and flames inside. Bystanders even jumped onto the hood of the car during the chaos, escalating tensions further.
In response to the escalating violence, police called for reinforcements from multiple precincts. Additional officers worked to disperse the crowd using unspecified methods and equipment. The Boston Fire Department was also dispatched to extinguish the fire that ultimately destroyed one police vehicle, which was later towed from the scene.
During the event, police arrested two individuals from Rhode Island. Julian Bowers, 18, of Cumberland, was apprehended after being spotted throwing items at officers and a police cruiser. He now faces several charges, including malicious destruction of property and resisting arrest.
William Cantwell, 19, of West Warwick, was also arrested after he was observed striking a cruiser with an orange pole. A brief altercation followed his apprehension, which resulted in charges of similar offenses. In addition, police found marijuana edibles in his belongings.
Both detainees are scheduled to appear in Roxbury District Court for their arraignment at a future date.
