HUDSONVILLE, Mich. — A winter storm driven by the Great Lakes wreaked havoc on Michigan roadways Monday, leading to a massive pileup involving over 100 vehicles, including upwards of 30 semitrailer trucks. The Michigan State Police closed both directions of Interstate 196 near Grand Rapids as officials worked tirelessly to clear the wreckage. Authorities reported numerous injuries, but fortunately, no fatalities.
As heavy snowfall reduced visibility, drivers like Pedro Mata Jr. struggled to navigate the treacherous conditions. Mata recounted his experience of creeping along at 20 to 25 miles per hour when the chaos unfolded. After safely stopping his pickup, he opted to pull into the median to avoid a collision from behind. “It was a little scary just listening to everything, the bangs and booms behind you,” he said, reflecting on the terrifying sounds of the accidents around him.
This incident is part of a broader trend, as a significant winter storm affects many states across the Midwest and beyond. The National Weather Service issued warnings for dangerously cold temperatures and potential winter storms affecting northern Minnesota, Wisconsin, Indiana, Ohio, Pennsylvania, and New York. A day prior, snow even reached the Florida Panhandle, complicating playoff football games in cities like Chicago and Massachusetts.
In Michigan, the Ottawa County Sheriff’s Office reported additional crashes and jackknifed semis, further complicating an already dire situation on the roads. Stranded motorists found refuge at Hudsonville High School, where they could seek assistance and arrange rides home. With multiple vehicle removals still needed, officials anticipated the highway would remain closed for several hours.
Grand Valley Towing was among the companies responding to the crisis, deploying more than a dozen trucks to assist with the recovery of stranded vehicles. Manager Jeff Westveld emphasized the urgency of their work, stating, “We’re trying to get as many vehicles out of there as quickly as possible, so we can get the road opened back up.”
The freezing temperatures accompanying the snowstorm have sparked warnings for regions as far south as north-central Florida and southeast Georgia, where the potential for further winter weather looms.
