CHICAGO – A 21-year-old man is facing serious charges in connection with a violent sexual assault that occurred in the Belmont Cragin neighborhood late last month. The incident, which authorities believe was random, took place around 3 a.m. on August 31 near Blackhawk Park.
Leyter Arauz-Medina, who resides less than a mile from the park, has been accused of attacking a 54-year-old woman as she walked home. During a detention hearing held on September 2, a judge denied him pre-trial release, citing the severity of the allegations.
Prosecutors allege that as the victim approached her building on Lavergne Avenue, Arauz-Medina lunged at her from the park, pulling her by her hair and knocking her to the ground. Eyewitness accounts and private surveillance footage picked up her screams, revealing the chilling nature of the encounter as residents became aware of the escalating situation.
After dragging her into an alleyway, Arauz-Medina reportedly continued the assault, eventually managing to strangle her. The defendant then allegedly slammed her head repeatedly against the concrete, causing her to lose consciousness. Court documents detail her desperate struggle to fight back once she regained awareness, but he overpowered her again, resuming the attack until the approach of a vehicle caused him to flee.
Dressed only in her undergarments, the victim sought assistance along Fullerton Avenue, ultimately finding refuge at a nearby food truck. The staff at El Azteca, the Mexican restaurant serving the truck, described her as visibly shaken and distressed. They immediately contacted authorities, while one worker provided her with a towel for coverage.
Initial police investigations revealed visible bruising on the victim’s body, and she was able to provide a detailed description of her attacker. Officers later recovered her belongings, including clothing and a purse, as well as items belonging to the suspect at the scene.
When law enforcement approached Arauz-Medina, he reportedly attempted to flee but was apprehended quickly. Further investigations uncovered cocaine in his possession, along with the victim’s clothing. During questioning, he acknowledged his drug use and recounted details of the encounter, expressing a disturbing desire to harm the victim.
Arauz-Medina’s case has since advanced to a direct indictment, with new filings submitted to the court on September 23. The specifics of these documents, including any potential further details about the assault or prior offenses, remain unclear.
The suspect is scheduled to return to court on October 6 for his next hearing, as the legal proceedings continue to unfold against the backdrop of this unsettling case.
