Chilling Plan Uncovered After Husband’s Murder-Suicide in Nandi Shocks Community

Nandi County, Kenya — Tragedy struck the quiet Kibwareng village in Nandi South when a 32-year-old man, Hanice Simani Juma, allegedly killed his wife, Winny Akutsa, and subsequently took his own life in a meticulously planned dual demise. The incident, which unfolded late Wednesday evening, has sent shockwaves through the local community and prompted a thorough police investigation.

According to the Nandi South Police Chief, Peter Maina, the grim sequence of events came to light approximately at 7 p.m., following a distress call from the victim’s family. Upon arrival at the scene, law enforcement discovered both Juma and Akutsa deceased under harrowing circumstances.

Authorities report that Juma had traveled from Nairobi to Nandi on January 13, intending to carry out the murder and subsequent suicide. Investigators found a detailed note in Juma’s pocket that outlined his chilling plan. It included specifics such as travel and attack plans, along with a list of items needed to carry out the act: fare from Nairobi, various knives, rat poison, marijuana, disguise elements like a hood and mask, protective goggles, and a small torch. The note also mentioned that Juma intended to conclude his plan by consuming poison and inflicting a fatal wound upon himself.

The details of the plan matched the gruesome scene encountered by police officers. Juma had reportedly concealed his intentions and arrived at Serem market to spend the night before heading to his wife’s parental home precisely at 7 p.m. as planned. His wife, Akutsa, unsuspecting of his intentions, was in the kitchen preparing supper when Juma attacked her with a knife.

Family members were alerted by her screams and rushed to her aid, only to find her severely injured and in a critical state. Despite being quickly transported to a nearby hospital, Akutsa was pronounced dead upon arrival.

In the immediate aftermath of the attack, Juma, following the script he had laid out in his note, ingested the poison he had mixed earlier and then inflicted a fatal wound upon himself. The community’s swift response brought him to the same hospital, where he too was pronounced dead.

This tragic case highlights a growing concern regarding domestic violence and mental health issues within the region. Local authorities and community leaders are calling for increased awareness and preventive measures to tackle these complex social issues.

Peter Mainana, reflecting on the incident, expressed deep concern for the impact on the community and stressed the importance of support for mental health, as well as robust mechanisms to foresee and forestall such tragedies.

The investigation is ongoing, with police determined to uncover the root cause of the tragedy and ensure that such incidents are prevented in the future. The community remains in mourning, with local leaders urging people to seek help when facing personal or marital challenges, emphasizing the importance of safeguarding mental health and community safety.
