Christian Woman Murdered in Varanasi Church Compound Sparks Community Concern

VARANASI, India – The brutal murder of a Christian woman at the St. Mary’s Cathedral Church compound in Varanasi, India, on Jan. 1 has left the community in shock, as it marks the second murder in the city this year.

The victim, known as Victoria, was around 50 years old and lived in Gumla, Jharkhand state. She resided with her sister, Retina, in the church’s staff quarters and was involved in the church’s activities.

According to Ronald Benjamin Nadar, a senior member of the church, the assailant, identified as Jitendra, also known as Chetu, reportedly entered the church through the back gate while the security guard was away. Taking advantage of the situation, he broke into Victoria’s room, which was unattended as Retina had already left for work.

The guard was informed by some women that they had seen an unidentified man enter the compound and go near the staff quarters. When they reached the quarters, they heard Victoria’s cries for help. After calling for help from additional guards, they forced the door open and found Victoria on the ground covered in blood, with the attacker holding an iron rod and a grinding stone.

The New Year’s Day murder of a lawyer in Varanasi adds to the disturbing trend of violence in the city. It is believed that the attacker attempted to assault the victim and, failing in his attempt, resorted to murder.

Police Commissioner S. Chinnappa later confirmed the arrest of Jitendra. The victim’s body was sent for post-mortem, with further actions contingent on the findings of the autopsy report. This tragic incident has raised concerns and sparked fear within the community.

The disturbing trend of violence in Varanasi calls for a thorough investigation and efforts to ensure the safety and security of the residents. The community is mourning the loss of Victoria and seeking justice for the heinous crime committed against her.
