Lokoja, Nigeria — Political tensions flared in Lokoja as allegations of violence emerged following the Supreme Court’s affirmation of Governor Usman Ododo’s election, an event that has ignited controversy and further complicated the political climate in Kogi State. Kingsley Fanwo, the Director of Media and Publicity for the Kogi APC Campaign Council, accused supporters of the Social Democratic Party (SDP) of initiating violent acts against APC members.
According to Fanwo, the confrontation began when SDP enthusiasts, shortly after the court’s ruling, began throwing stones, bottles, and plastic containers at APC supporters gathered outside the court. This hostility reportedly erupted immediately after the Supreme Court confirmed Governor Ododo as the duly elected leader, a judgement that was unfavorable to the SDP and its candidate, Murtala Ajaka.
Fanwo detailed that the violence intensified as SDP candidate Ajaka, reportedly disregarding the court’s call for decorum, exited the courthouse with a group of his supporters immediately after the verdict. He alleged that this departure triggered Ajaka’s supporters to attack the jubilant APC crowd, causing significant disruption within the court premises.
The APC has condemned these actions as undemocratic and uncivilized, and reiterated their commitment to continue serving the people of Kogi state by delivering on the promises aligned with President Bola Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda.
In response to these allegations, Isaiah Ijele, spokesperson for the Muri/Sam Campaign Council of the SDP, labeled the APC’s claim as misleading and accused them of falsifying the narrative. Ijele contended that it was actually Ajaka and his supporters who were the victims of aggression by APC affiliates at the Supreme Court premises. He emphasized that the SDP should be the party voicing grievances and condemning the actions, rather than the APC.
