Columbia Man Fatally Shot Following Argument: Suspect Arrested and Charged with Murder

COLUMBIA, S.C. — A man has been identified as the victim of a fatal shooting in northeast Columbia over the weekend. Brian Barrett, 30, was pronounced dead Saturday night following an altercation that escalated dangerously on Polo Road.

The Richland County Sheriff’s Department reported that the incident began when Barrett and a suspect, identified as 44-year-old Charles McCants, engaged in a heated argument. Authorities assert that the confrontation turned violent, resulting in McCants allegedly shooting Barrett multiple times before fleeing the scene.

Deputies arrived shortly after in response to calls about the shooting, where they discovered Barrett unresponsive. He suffered severe gunshot wounds to the upper chest and was subsequently transported to a local hospital, where he succumbed to his injuries.

The search for McCants concluded the following day in Hartsville, where law enforcement located him. He has since been charged with murder alongside several related weapon offenses. After his arrest, McCants was transferred back to Richland County, where he was booked into the Alvin S. Glenn Detention Center.

A bond hearing for McCants is scheduled for Monday afternoon, setting the stage for the next steps in the judicial process. This incident underscores ongoing concerns about gun violence and the potential for disputes to escalate into tragic outcomes.

Community members are left reeling as they come to terms with the shocking event, which has raised alarm regarding safety and responsibility in personal conflicts. As the investigation continues, officials stress the importance of addressing violent confrontations before they lead to irreversible consequences.
