AUKI, Solomon Islands — Authorities have apprehended a 40-year-old man suspected of assaulting a worker from the China Civil Engineering Construction Corporation (CCECC) at the Kolofe campsite in Malaita Province. The arrest occurred on the morning of February 12, facilitated by local community members who assisted police in locating the suspect at his village home.
Police had made several unsuccessful attempts to detain the suspect prior to this operation. Superintendent Michael Ramosaea, the provincial police commander for Malaita, noted that community involvement was crucial in bringing the suspect into custody.
Following the assault, which took place on December 9, 2025, the suspect allegedly continued to threaten CCECC employees and police officials. The recent capture has alleviated some concerns within the community, according to local sources.
Superintendent Ramosaea confirmed that the suspect is now being held at Auki Correctional Centre. He has been charged with grievous bodily harm, as outlined in Section 226 of the Penal Code, and is scheduled to appear in court. Additionally, the suspect faces charges related to previous legal issues for which he had not attended court.
Ramosaea emphasized the importance of community support in fostering safer environments. His remarks highlighted the collaborative efforts between law enforcement and residents in addressing violence and threats in the area.
This incident underscores ongoing concerns about safety in regions where construction projects are underway, as tensions can sometimes arise between workers and local populations. The Solomon Islands police are working actively to ensure that such conflicts are resolved swiftly and effectively.
With the legal proceedings against the suspect set to move forward, community leaders hope this case will serve as a reminder of the need for ongoing vigilance and cooperation to enhance public safety and accountability.
