CINCINNATI, Ohio — Friends and family gathered Saturday evening to honor the life of Diamond Rice, a Baltimore native who was fatally shot earlier this month. Despite frigid temperatures, dozens assembled outside New Shiloh Apostolic Temple on Hartford Road to celebrate the 33-year-old’s contributions and spirit.
Rice was killed on February 1 amid a reported argument, leading to the arrest of Jasmine Blake, who has been charged with murder. Court documents indicate that the dispute escalated into violence, a tragic turn that has left many in the community seeking answers.
“She was like sunshine on a cloudy day,” said Wanda Sommonds, Rice’s mother, reflecting on her daughter’s vibrant personality and ability to uplift those around her. Sommonds noted that while Rice had faced challenges in her younger years, she emerged as a beacon of hope and resilience. Her father, Scotty B., described his daughter as “very strong, very beautiful” and expressed the family’s profound sense of loss.
Before her untimely death, Rice had moved to Cincinnati to serve as the assistant director for Hamilton County’s Youth Advocate Programs. The organization’s director issued a heartfelt tribute, stating, “Diamond was a powerful force at YAP and she is sorely missed here in Hamilton County, Ohio, and nationally.” Her commitment to sharing her personal story helped inspire many, raising awareness and funding for critical nonprofit initiatives.
Both parents are grappling with the aftermath of Rice’s death. Scotty B. recalled a conversation he had with her just days prior, urging her to resolve her disputes, not anticipating the tragedy that would unfold. “We talked for a little while and said, ‘You don’t know what’s going to happen tomorrow,'” he recounted.
In the wake of her passing, they are left searching for answers, particularly from Blake, who had previously dated Rice. “I just want to understand why this happened,” Sommonds shared, expressing her desire to communicate with Blake’s family for insight into the circumstances surrounding the shooting.
Blake made her initial court appearance on February 2, with her bond set at $750,000. As the investigation continues, the community mourns a passionate advocate who left lasting impacts on those she encountered. The vigil served as a reminder of the importance of solidarity and support in the face of such overwhelming loss.
