Community in Mourning: Claflin University Mourns Loss of Beloved Student and Church Leader, O’Brian Grant

Orangeburg, S.C. — The community is grieving the loss of 20-year-old O’Brian Grant, a Claflin University student, after he was fatally shot over the weekend. The Orangeburg County Sheriff’s Office reports the incident occurred a few miles from the university campus, where Grant was allegedly killed by Nathanial Grant, who is not related to him.

The encounter between the two individuals took place around 9:30 a.m. on Saturday, roughly an hour before O’Brian Grant was shot. Authorities claim that Nathanial used a stolen firearm in the commission of the crime, subsequently fleeing in O’Brian Grant’s vehicle. He remained at large until his arrest later by law enforcement.

Nathanial is now facing several charges that include murder, grand larceny, and illegal possession of a weapon during the commission of a violent crime, as detailed by the sheriff’s office.

The loss has profoundly impacted both the Santee and Orangeburg communities, particularly felt at the Chapel Hill Baptist Church. Deacon Johnny Ravenell, a church leader, remembered O’Brian Grant as a devout believer and a valued community figure. According to Ravenell, Grant’s murder has left an indelible mark on their congregation.

Ravenell expressed the deep sorrow of the community and recounted the shock of learning about Grant’s death. He emphasized Grant’s active involvement in the church, noting how he would walk to Wednesday night bible study sessions when he didn’t have a ride. His commitment extended beyond just his participation; he was also a leader in youth ministry, shaping the lives of his peers.

O’Brian Grant’s funeral is scheduled for 11 a.m. this upcoming Saturday at Lake Marion High School. The tragic circumstances of his death have magnified the grief of those who knew him.

Reflecting on his personal connection with Grant, Ravenell shared, “He was always someone you could rely on, consistently involved and genuinely concerned with church affairs.”

The community continues to reel under the weight of this tragedy, as family, friends, and church members come together to mourn and remember a life cut tragically short. The ongoing investigation by local authorities seeks to bring further clarity to the circumstances surrounding O’Brian Grant’s untimely death, providing some semblance of justice to those he leaves behind.
