Pietermaritzburg, South Africa – A shocking incident erupted in the Ezinketheni informal settlement near Copesville this past weekend, where a man suspected of brutally murdering a seven-year-old boy was himself killed by local residents. The young victim, identified as Lenathi Sfundo Mkhize, was allegedly lured and slain by a man considered to be a friend of the boy’s father.
Community members reported that the suspect was attacked late Sunday night after they discovered him returning to his shack, the same location where the body of Mkhize was found earlier. According to Sham Govender, chairperson of the Community Policing Forum, and Mthandeni Zikhali, chairperson of the School Governing Board at Umsilinga Primary School, the livid crowd sought justice on their own terms.
Mkhize was a second-grade student at nearby Umsilinga Primary School. His body was found lying face down, bound by his hands and feet with a jacket, showing signs of having been strangled and sustaining a stab wound to the left shoulder. This gruesome discovery has shaken the close-knit community, adding a layer of tragedy to the already tense atmosphere in the settlement.
Residents reportedly acted on impulse when capturing the suspect. Zikhali noted that while the community initially preferred legal action, the suspect’s attempt to escape provoked a more violent reaction. “The area is rugged, making his escape difficult, and when he fell while running downhill, the community members overwhelmed him, resulting in his death by stoning,” explained Zikhali.

Zikhali expressed regret over the manner of justice but understood the community’s outrage, especially given the suspect’s reported history of antisocial behavior which had alienated his own family.
William Rutambo, the grieving father of the boy, conveyed his profound distress over the events. Although understanding the community’s anger, Rutambo lamented the suspect’s death for a different reason – it left many questions unanswered about his child’s violent death. “He did something horrendous, and now we may never know why,” Rutambo remarked.
