GENESEO, N.Y. — The SUNY Geneseo community is reflecting on a tragic chapter in its history as it marks ten years since the murder-suicide that took the lives of student athletes Kelsey Annese and Matthew Hutchinson. The incident unfolded on Jan. 17, 2016, when police responded to a call at a residence on Wadsworth Street early in the morning.
Upon arrival, authorities discovered the bodies of Annese’s ex-boyfriend, Colin Kingston, along with Annese and Hutchinson. Investigators reported that Kingston entered Annese’s home and attacked both her and Hutchinson with a knife before taking his own life. The initial alert about the violence came from Kingston, who contacted his father to confess his actions.
Hutchinson, a member of the Geneseo men’s hockey team, was also a dedicated firefighter and EMT for the Geneseo Fire Department. Annese, a talented player for the women’s basketball team, hailed from Webster, N.Y. Both individuals were known for their commitment not only to sports but also to their roles within the community.
In remembrance of the two athletes, members of the Geneseo Fire Department took to social media. They shared heartfelt memories, highlighting Annese and Hutchinson’s dedication and leadership qualities that touched the lives of those around them. “Kelsey and Hutch will always be remembered for their hard work, leadership, and dedication to their teammates,” said the department in a tribute post.
Following the incident, the Geneseo campus echoed with sorrow as students grappled with the loss. A few days later, local media spoke with Geneseo Fire Chief Andrew Chanler, who expressed deep sadness over Hutchinson’s death. “We lost a great person in an awful tragedy,” Chanler reflected, as the fire department mourned the loss of one of its own.
To commemorate the anniversary of their deaths, a men’s hockey game against Manhattanville took place Saturday afternoon, where the fire department’s color guard participated to honor Hutchinson’s memory. The event served not only as a sporting occasion but as a poignant reminder of the lives impacted by the tragedy.
As the community remembers Annese and Hutchinson, their legacy continues to inspire current students and alumni alike. They are celebrated not only for their athleticism but also for their unwavering commitment to service and friendship. The reflection on their lives serves as a crucial reminder of the importance of mental health awareness and community support.
