Community Mourns as Funeral Services Set for Fallen Delaware Trooper Ambushed at DMV

WILMINGTON, Del. — The Delaware State Police have announced funeral arrangements for Corporal Matthew Snook, who was tragically killed in a shooting incident at a local DMV just before Christmas. The incident has left the community grappling with the loss of a dedicated law enforcement officer.

Cpl. Snook was on an overtime shift at the Wilmington Department of Motor Vehicles on December 23 when he was fatally shot by 44-year-old Rahman Rose. Witnesses reported that Rose approached the reception desk and unleashed gunfire, prompting Snook to push an employee to safety. Tragically, Snook was struck multiple times during the attack. Following the initial shooting, Rose reportedly allowed other customers to exit the building before preparing for a confrontation with responding officers.

As police arrived, Rose opened fire on them, leading to an exchange of gunfire in which a New Castle County Police officer shot Rose through a window. Both men were rushed to nearby hospitals, but ultimately succumbed to their injuries. In addition to Cpl. Snook and Rose, one other officer suffered a minor injury not related to gunfire, while another woman was treated for a minor injury.

To honor Cpl. Snook’s service and sacrifice, a memorial service is scheduled for January 5 at the University of Delaware’s Bob Carpenter Center. The public is invited to pay their respects during a visitation from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m., followed by a formal memorial service. A private burial will take place afterward.

Statements from the Delaware State Police highlight Snook’s strong reputation among his peers and the community. According to officials, he was not only a respected officer but also a beloved family man. A message from the Delaware State Troopers Association characterized him as a devoted husband and father, noting his commitment to those he served.

“He embodied courage, integrity, and selflessness in every aspect of his life,” stated the association in an online fundraising effort for Snook’s family. Supporters and colleagues alike remember him for his calm demeanor, kindness, and unwavering dedication to public safety.

As the state mourns the loss of Cpl. Snook, the incident has reignited discussions around police safety and community relations. Residents and fellow officers alike are coming together to support one another during this challenging time, remembering a fallen hero whose life was taken too soon.
