The funeral, held at Living Word Community Church, drew law enforcement and emergency responders from across Pennsylvania, reflecting the profound impact of his death on the community.
Officer Duarte died on February 22, in the line of duty, amid a violent hostage situation at the hospital located in West Manchester Township. The attack not only claimed his life but also left an indelible mark on those who witnessed it. Reports indicate the assailant, identified as 49-year-old Diogenes Archangel-Ortiz, entered the hospital’s Intensive Care Unit with a handgun and zip ties. Archangel-Ortiz, previously grief-stricken by the loss of a terminally ill family member at the same hospital, took multiple nurses hostage in a confrontation that ended disastrously.
Witness accounts from the scene describe a harrowing experience, with one nurse feeling the physical and emotional weight as “every click of that gun was like being punched in the head.” This chilling description came from a Facebook post that recounted the traumatic experience of nurse Jessica Breighner, shared by her spouse, Jason Huff.
Another nurse, Tosha Trostle, provided a firsthand account of her terrifying ordeal, finding herself under the attacker’s weight as law enforcement officers stormed the room. Amid shouts and gunfire, Trostle narrowly escaped as the police subdued Archangel-Ortiz.
