Community Mourns the Loss of Teen Hero Gustavo Dela Rosa, Killed Aiding a Friend Amid Dispute

Houston, TX – An 18-year-old named Gustavo Dela Rosa tragically lost his life during a violent exchange of gunfire last Sunday in north Houston, prompting a surge of community support and a plea for justice by family members.

The incident, rooted in a confrontation between two familiar groups, occurred outside a residence on Mayford Street near Parker Road. Houston police reported that following an initial altercation, the suspects withdrew only to return again, escalating the tension into gunfire. Amidst the chaos, Dela Rosa was struck by a bullet.

Quickly, his friends transported him into a nearby house, attempting urgent life-saving measures; nevertheless, he succumbed to his injuries.

The aftermath of the incident saw police officers engaged in a short pursuit of a vehicle believed to be involved, which ended with the vehicle crashing into a ditch. Although several individuals were detained, charges concerning Dela Rosa’s death have yet to be made.

In the wake of the shooting, the community has come together to support the victim’s family, gathering at La Escondida Park – a place Dela Rosa’s mother, Beverly Martinez, fondly remembers he loved as a child. The family organized a plate sale to raise funds for his funeral expenses, reflecting the communal spirit Dela Rosa espoused.

Beverly Martinez, grappling with grief, recalled her son’s readiness to assist others. “One of his friends called him for help during a problem, and without hesitation, Gustavo went, which tragically led to his fatal involvement,” Martinez shared.

The police, while continuing their investigation, have urged anyone with information to step forward, assisting in delivering justice for a young man described by his relatives as inherently helpful and protective, especially towards his younger siblings in a family of five.

“Let me know, give me answers, that’s all I need. I need justice for what happened to my son; he didn’t deserve to end like this,” Martinez implored the public.

The local community, significantly touched by Dela Rosa’s untimely death, remains proactive. A GoFundMe page has been established to cover funeral costs, and another fundraising event is scheduled next Sunday on Normandy Street.

In light of these events, law enforcement officials have reiterated their call for witnesses or anyone with relevant information to contact the Houston Police at 713-308-3600, emphasizing that every small detail could be pivotal in solving the case and providing closure for a grieving family.
