Community Rallies in Support as Abundant Life Christian School Reopens Doors After Tragic Shooting

Madison, Wis. – It has been over three weeks since a horrific shooting at Abundant Life Christian School in Madison left a teacher and student dead. This past Friday marked a somber return for staff and students as they resumed classes in a building that not only bore physical changes with enhanced security measures but also intense emotional shifts.

Principal Doug Butler disclosed in a recent video message how school facilities had been altered for higher safety, including both visible and less apparent security enhancements. “Our surroundings may look and feel shifted, reflecting the change,” he said. Butler also mentioned that faculty had received training in trauma-informed care to better support students and identify signs of trauma within themselves.

The community has pulled together to offer messages of support and reassurance to the grieving school. Among them, Wisconsin Badgers head football coach Luke Fickell expressed his solidarity, “Our entire Badger team is thinking of you. We are here to help in any way possible.”

Wisconsin State Superintendent Jill Underly, Governor Tony Evers, and other local figures, including Wisconsin Attorney General Josh Kaul and Madison Police Chief Shon Barnes, were also among those showing their support through words of encouragement, vouching for the collective backing of the community.

Police continue to investigate the reasons behind the shooting that took place on December 16, carried out by 15-year-old student Natalie “Samantha” Rupnow during a study session. Rupnow tragically ended her life following the attack. Information surfaced that prior to the incident, she had been in communication with a 20-year-old man from California. The man was later apprehended on suspicions of conspiring with Rupnow to attack a government facility using firearms and explosives.

The victims of the tragic shooting were identified as 14-year-old student Rubi Vergara, who had been part of the ALCS community since kindergarten, and 42-year-old Erin West, a mother of three who had recently transitioned from a substitute teacher to the school’s substitute coordinator.

In expressions of hope and resilience, community leaders and school officials emphasized the ongoing support systems in place for those affected. Deputy Joselyn Longley with the Dane County Sheriff’s Office reassured, “Please know that you are not alone during this recovery process, we are always here for you.”

As Abundant Life Christian School endeavors to move forward, the layered support from individuals, local authorities, and community leaders underscores a unified front aimed at healing and strengthening in the wake of this devastating event.
