Community Reels After Pregnant Teen’s Tragic Death in South Carolina Shooting; 17-Year-Old Arrested

FLORENCE, S.C. — A tragic incident in Florence has left a community in shock after a 19-year-old woman was fatally shot while sitting in a parked car. Zynaija Thomas, a resident of Bishopville, was identified by the Florence County Coroner, who confirmed she was approximately 19 weeks pregnant at the time of the shooting.

Local authorities report that the fatal attack occurred on December 1 in the 600 block of Roberts Street. A 17-year-old suspect, Ja’kaurie Bell, has been apprehended and faces multiple charges, including murder, attempted murder, and the unlawful possession of a weapon during the commission of a violent act.

Investigators believe that a vehicle spotted near the shooting scene played a critical role in their investigation. Surveillance footage showed the vehicle correlating with the timeline of the shooting, leading authorities to Bell as the alleged driver. Reports indicate that Bell, alongside others, drove to the location and opened fire on the car occupied by Thomas and her boyfriend, who fortunately was unharmed and took Thomas to the hospital.

Bell has been transported to a detention facility, where he awaits a bond hearing. As of now, it remains uncertain whether more individuals will face charges in connection with this event.

Residents in the vicinity expressed their fears and sadness over the incident, with some calling for a reduction in gun violence. One resident shared their concern for the emotional toll this has taken on the community, especially when reflecting on younger people in their own families.

The interim police chief of Florence, Stephen Starling, emphasized the necessity for communal efforts to address youth violence. He urged residents to become actively involved in mentoring and guiding young individuals, suggesting that providing support could deter them from resorting to firearms in heated situations.

The investigation remains ongoing as detectives sift through evidence and interviews in an effort to piece together the full story behind this tragedy. Community leaders continue to call for dialogue on how to reduce gun-related incidents and emphasize the importance of supporting youth in the area.
