Downpatrick, Northern Ireland — A murder investigation has been initiated following the death of a man in Downpatrick, an incident believed to be connected to a violent assault on a priest earlier that same day. Local authorities responded to reports of a body discovered in the Marian Park area around noon on Sunday.
A 30-year-old man has been arrested in connection with the murder and is currently in police custody. This news comes on the heels of a harrowing incident at St. Patrick’s Church, where the parish priest, Father John Murray, was seriously injured after being struck on the head with a bottle during morning services.
Superintendent Norman Haslett, the district commander for Newry, Mourne and Down, confirmed that officials are investigating a potential link between the tragic death and the attack on the priest. “Inquiries are at an early stage, and we suspect this may be connected to a serious assault that occurred earlier in St. Patrick’s Avenue,” he remarked.
Detective Chief Inspector McBurney described the attack on Father Murray as “shocking and brutal,” urging anyone with pertinent information to come forward. “We need the community’s help to assist in our investigation,” he said.
Local politicians have also expressed their outrage over the events.
