Community Unites in Grief: Vigil Held for Rainier Beach Teens Tragically Lost to Gun Violence

SEATTLE — The community of Rainier Beach united in grief over the weekend, mourning the tragic loss of two local teenagers who were shot while waiting at a bus stop. Hundreds gathered for a vigil on Saturday afternoon, expressing their sorrow alongside the victims’ families.

Amidst tears and prayer, Rev. Lawrence Willis urged those in attendance to find strength in unity. “We’re going to move forward together,” he said, asking the crowd to support one another during this painful time. The vigil drew more than 200 attendees, primarily friends and classmates of the deceased, all seeking solace in shared mourning.

Victoria Beach, a community leader and longtime liaison with the Seattle Police Department, voiced her frustration over the ongoing violence affecting young Black men in the area. “It’s heartbreaking,” she remarked during the vigil, emphasizing the need for sustained action rather than fleeting responses. “We have meetings, but they lead to no solutions,” she lamented, criticizing the pattern of temporary increases in police presence that fade after incidents occur.

The Seattle Police Department reported that the shooting took place shortly before 4 p.m. on Friday, shortly after classes ended at nearby Rainier Beach High School and South Shore PreK-8. Eyewitness accounts indicated that the shooter fled the scene before authorities arrived, leaving first responders to attempt lifesaving measures on the victims, who tragically did not survive.

Reflecting on the horror of seeing a child lost to violence, Beach expressed her deep concern for the families affected. “Seeing your child laying out in the street dead? Horrific,” she said, underlining the urgency of change in the community.

For Beach, a critical step toward improving safety is reinstating police officers in schools. “We need police officers back in schools. Whether you like it or not, we need them back,” she declared, advocating for proactive measures to prevent future tragedies.

As the investigation continues, authorities have yet to identify the victims or disclose any information about the suspect, who remains at large. The police are urging anyone with information about the incident to come forward, as the community grapples with its loss and seeks justice for the slain teenagers.

This tragic incident has ignited conversations about the broader issues surrounding youth violence in Seattle, prompting community leaders and residents to call for effective solutions to safeguard the lives of young people in their neighborhoods. The united front shown at the vigil highlights the commitment among community members to create a safer environment for future generations.
